CHAPTER 10
Skruj sat in the back of his vehicle, his claws tapping impatiently on the upholstery. It had been two days since the⦠Incident and he hadnât seen Bobbi since then. He had called her twice, merely to check on Timâs health heâd told himself, and each time they had spoken for almost an hour. Sheâd told him more about her past - much of which infuriated him - and heâd wished he could have been there to watch the emotions dancing across her expressive little face as she talked. And now he would be able to see her - if they ever arrived.
âDoesnât this vehicle go any faster?â he snapped.
âYes, Master Skruj. The other traffic however, does not.â
Littimaâs voice was as calm and untroubled as always, but Skruj heard the note of amusement and sighed.
âSorry.â
âItâs just holiday traffic, sir. We will arrive in good time.â
And indeed they did, but it felt as if hours had passed before the vehicle drew to a halt. He didnât bother waiting for Littima to open the door, impatient to see Bobbi. He strode up the steps and knocked sharply.
She opened it immediately, already wrapped in the red velvet cloak that matched her dress, and smiled up at him.
âYouâre early.â
âAnd youâre ready.â
Her beautiful eyes sparkled up at him.
âMaybe I was anxious to see you again, snookums.â
He put his arm around her velvet covered waist and drew her close.
âWhat will it take to make you forget that ridiculous name?â
Before she could respond, the door further down the hall flew open and a family of Coomar tumbled out. He recognized the little girl who had answered the door but the rest were new to him, especially the very large Coomar male who was regarding him suspiciously.
âEben, this is the Mâgid family - my landlords and very dear friends.â
âWeâre very pleased to meet you, Master Skruj.â The matriarch greeted him warmly, but her mate only grunted. âThe two of you have a good time tonight and donât worry about a thing. Weâll take good care of Timmy.â
âWhere is he?â he asked, looking around for the boy.
âHere I am.â The boy dashed out of the hall door. âI wanted to give you this - to thank you for taking us skating.â
He handed Skruj a haphazardly wrapped package and he felt a sudden lump in his throat.
âThank you.â
He carefully opened it and discovered a small painted ornament depicting a skating scene. It was made of cheap glass but it was clear that someone had put a great deal of effort into the painting.
âTimmy made it,â Bobbi whispered.
âItâs perfect. Is that us?â he asked, tracing the small figures skating around the rink.
Tim beamed proudly.
âYep. This way each time you decorate your tree, you can remember the time you taught me to skate.â
âThank you, Tim. I will treasure it.â
The boy grinned and ducked his head, then dashed back inside the Mâgidâs apartment. The rest of the family followed, Mr. Mâgid still glaring at him.
âThank you,â Bobbi said quietly.
âFor what?â
âFor not telling him that you donât have a tree.
