CHAPTER 10

Skruj sat in the back of his vehicle, his claws tapping impatiently on the upholstery. It had been two days since the… Incident and he hadn’t seen Bobbi since then. He had called her twice, merely to check on Tim’s health he’d told himself, and each time they had spoken for almost an hour. She’d told him more about her past - much of which infuriated him - and he’d wished he could have been there to watch the emotions dancing across her expressive little face as she talked. And now he would be able to see her - if they ever arrived.

“Doesn’t this vehicle go any faster?” he snapped.

“Yes, Master Skruj. The other traffic however, does not.”

Littima’s voice was as calm and untroubled as always, but Skruj heard the note of amusement and sighed.

“Sorry.”

“It’s just holiday traffic, sir. We will arrive in good time.”

And indeed they did, but it felt as if hours had passed before the vehicle drew to a halt. He didn’t bother waiting for Littima to open the door, impatient to see Bobbi. He strode up the steps and knocked sharply.

She opened it immediately, already wrapped in the red velvet cloak that matched her dress, and smiled up at him.

“You’re early.”

“And you’re ready.”

Her beautiful eyes sparkled up at him.

“Maybe I was anxious to see you again, snookums.”

He put his arm around her velvet covered waist and drew her close.

“What will it take to make you forget that ridiculous name?”

Before she could respond, the door further down the hall flew open and a family of Coomar tumbled out. He recognized the little girl who had answered the door but the rest were new to him, especially the very large Coomar male who was regarding him suspiciously.

“Eben, this is the M’gid family - my landlords and very dear friends.”

“We’re very pleased to meet you, Master Skruj.” The matriarch greeted him warmly, but her mate only grunted. “The two of you have a good time tonight and don’t worry about a thing. We’ll take good care of Timmy.”

“Where is he?” he asked, looking around for the boy.

“Here I am.” The boy dashed out of the hall door. “I wanted to give you this - to thank you for taking us skating.”

He handed Skruj a haphazardly wrapped package and he felt a sudden lump in his throat.

“Thank you.”

He carefully opened it and discovered a small painted ornament depicting a skating scene. It was made of cheap glass but it was clear that someone had put a great deal of effort into the painting.

“Timmy made it,” Bobbi whispered.

“It’s perfect. Is that us?” he asked, tracing the small figures skating around the rink.

Tim beamed proudly.

“Yep. This way each time you decorate your tree, you can remember the time you taught me to skate.”

“Thank you, Tim. I will treasure it.”

The boy grinned and ducked his head, then dashed back inside the M’gid’s apartment. The rest of the family followed, Mr. M’gid still glaring at him.

“Thank you,” Bobbi said quietly.

“For what?”

“For not telling him that you don’t have a tree.
